Study: 12% of Indian deaths due to alcohol

WASHINGTON - Alcohol-related deaths among American Indians and Alaska Natives are nearly three times higher than the rate of people in the general population of the U.S.

A report from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 11.7 percent of deaths among American Indians and Alaska Natives between 2001 and 2005 were alcohol-related. The rate for the U.S. as a whole is 3.3%.

The statistics came from an analysis of death certificates over the four-year period. One of the study's authors says this should be a "call to action" for federal, state, local and tribal governments. The study recommends what it terms "culturally appropriate clinical interventions" to reduce excessive drinking and better integration between tribal health care centers and tribal courts.
