Man pleads no contest in Polson standoff

POLSON - A 62-year-old Polson man has pleaded no contest to assault with a weapon and criminal endangerment.

The two felony counts stem from what authorities said was a three-hour standoff April 22 with police in Polson. Prosecutors said an intoxicated Wilbert Michel entered the home of his estranged wife in violation of a restraining order, grabbed a rifle and fired a shot as his wife and three children ran from the house.

Deputy Lake County Attorney Mark Russell said authorities don't believe Michel was aiming at anyone when the rifle went off. Michel entered the no-contest pleas Wednesday in Lake County District Court in Polson. A plea agreement calls for a five-year deferred sentence on each count, to run consecutively, plus 25 days in jail. Sentencing is set for October 1st.
