HELENA - Police in Helena and Great Falls are warning of a telephone scam by which crooks are trying to gain credit and debit card numbers.

Helena Police Detective Russ Whitcomb says callers receive a computer-generated phone message that says their card from a financial institution is about to expire or be deactivated. The message then tells you to push the number one and asks for your card account number, then the expiration date and PIN number.

Whitcomb said Tuesday afternoon that the calls are not from financial institutions. He advises: "Hang up. Don't press any number." People who receive the calls do not need to contact the police unless they have supplied the caller with their account information. If you have done so, Whitcomb says you should contact your financial institution and the police immediately.
