HELENA - Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana has created a new foundation aimed at improving the health of residents and health care delivery in the state.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation for Healthy Montanans will be funded for its first year with $2 million from the insurer's for-profit subsidiaries: Western States Insurance, Insurance Coordinators of Montana and Health-E-Web.

Blue Cross President and CEO Sherry Cladouhos says the foundation expects to award the entire $2 million in its first year to groups that work to reduce childhood obesity by encouraging exercise and healthy eating habits.

BCBS believes that helping people lead healthier lives is an effective way to hold down health care costs.
