BILLINGS - One more hurdle for travelers trying to enter the United States, but more importantly one more step to add safety to our borders.

Friday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S Department of State announced all travelers coming into the country, including U.S. citizens who were previously exempt must present a passport or other approved secure identity. The rule takes effect June 1, 2009.

The announcement comes one year in advance to give the public ample time to obtain passports. "Now is a really good time to do it because it is taking about three weeks or a little less than that, where as last year it was up to 12 week," said Nancy Voeller, passport agent.

The secure documentation will be required at all land and sea borders. It is already in place for all air travelers.
