Baucus, Conrad say new farm bill proposal unacceptable

WASHINGTON - High Plains senators say a new farm bill proposal would shortchange farmers who have lost crops to bad weather. A dedicated fund designed to help those farmers continues to be a sticking point.

Tuesday, Minnesota Representative Collin Peterson and Iowa Senator Tom Harkin proposed spending more than $2 billion dollars over 10 years on the so-called agriculture disaster fund. That is much less than the roughly $5 billion dollars over five years that was included in the Senate bill. The House included no money for the program.

Some say the Harkin-Peterson proposal is unacceptable. Senator Max Baucus of Montana says he won't vote for any fund that doesn't give disaster assistance right to farmers in need.
