Empty Bowls Fill Needs of Women's Shelter

HELENA - One thousand empty bowls, filled by the Helena community, will also help fill the chafers of the Capitol City's women's shelter. The Friendship Center provides shelter, crisis programs and legal assistance for victims of domestic violence and their children.

Deputy County Attorney Mike Menahan has worked with the center for over ten years. He says the shelter gives abused women the step up they need. "She typically has no money, she has no resources available to get her out of this situation. And so The Friendship Center is there to provide a place to live, clothes, to help a woman get back on her feet and get out of a situation in which she and her children may be in danger," he explained.

Over 1,000 sexual and domestic violence victims were served by Helena's Friendship Center last year. Tuesday the center will ask the Helena community to provide a large portion of the financial support needed to keep the shelter running for another year. "This is the main community-based fundraiser that supports The Friendship Center's day to day operations during the course of the year. This is our main revenue source for the entire year," Menahan added.

Local artists have donated over 1,000 ceramic bowls to the event. The Friendship Center hopes to raise about $25,000 of their $.5 million yearly budget.

The Empty Bowl Benefit takes place at the Carroll College Student Center from 5 - 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 and kids 12 and under eat for free. Tickets are available at the door.
