Critics denounce proposed medical marijuana ban for parolees

HELENA - Critics at a Helena hearing denounced a proposed Department of Corrections rule, that would bar anyone on parole or probation from obtaining medical marijuana as a prescription drug, despite a state law that makes it legal.

Tom Daubert is with Patients and Families United, a medical marijuana advocacy group. At yesterday's hearing he said the proposed rule completely defies Montana's medical marijuana law, enacted by voters in 2004.

Pam Bunke is administrator of the Adult Community Corrections Division for the Corrections Department. She defended the proposed rule, saying people on parole and probation are subject to certain restrictions because they broke the law.

The Corrections Department will decide in the coming months whether to adopt the rule.
