Meth Project Spreads to Illinois

By Alden Downing

HELENA - The state of Illinois has followed in the footsteps of the Montana Meth Project, Wednesday launching a meth prevention campaign of their own.

Montana's meth prevention success is further highlighted as several more states across the country are working to build programs after the ad campaign. What was looking to reach epidemic proportions now seems to be loosing its hold on Montana teens.

"In 1999, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which is a survey done in our schools, said that there were 13% of young people, high school kids, that were trying meth. Last year when that came out, the fall of 2007, that number had been reduced to 4.6%. That's a dramatic improvement," explained Montana Attorney General Mike McGrath.

He adds that while the numbers of teens reportedly trying meth is making significant strides, the drug is still a problem in many Montana communities. Over half of the children in foster care are there because of meth-addicted parents. But, in the long run, he says stopping first-time meth use is a key part of prevention.
