BILLINGS - In the race for the Senate seat here in Montana, Senator Max Baucus is setting records for campaign funds. So far, he's raised $8.9 million dollars. In comparison, the two Republican candidates have funds in the thousands.

Kirk Bushman estimates he's raised between $30,000 and $40,000 dollars. Michael Lange's campaign reported about $6,000 dollars in his war chest a few months ago. But Lange says you don't need a fortune to run for office.

He says the way to go about it is to conduct a grass-roots campaign. "No matter how much money is spent, money is just a mechanism to get yourself know and get people to vote for you. When you're out there and you're across the table from folks and you show up at their doorsteps, that's a different way" says Lange.

Bushman says most of Baucus' funds come from out of state, and that makes as much of a statement as the fact that he has raised so much. Congressman Denny Rehberg is also making history with his war chest which is now over half million dollars.
