Former employee settles wrongful discharge case

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) — An attorney for the city of Bozeman says the former executive assistant to the city manager has agreed to settle her wrongful discharge lawsuit for $20,000.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle (http://bit.ly/yBfkhs ) reports Karen Semerau sued the city several months after she was laid off. She was told budgetary concerns had led to a reduction in the city's employees.

Her attorney argued that the city had not prepared its budget for the upcoming year, no other employees were let go and city officials approved hiring three employees two months after Semerau was laid off.

The city argued that Semerau did not file a grievance under city policies and asked District Judge John Brown to dismiss the lawsuit.

An attorney for the city declined comment Wednesday beyond stating the settlement amount.
