BUTTE, Mont. (AP) — Butte-Silver Bow officials say a 77-year-old Butte man shot himself to death after being pulled over by a Montana Highway Patrol trooper near Butte.

KXLF-TV first reported the shooting, which occurred around 4:40 p.m. Monday, about a mile south of the junction of Interstates 90 and 15.

Coroner Lee LaBreche says the man died of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Capt. Doug Conway says the trooper told police he was in the process of making a traffic stop when the shooting took place. Conway told The Montana Standard that the shooting appeared to happen very quickly and there was no standoff or communication between the trooper and the motorist.
