Fence going up to keep Pryor horses off forest

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Construction is slated to begin as soon as next week on a fence that officials say will keep wild horses off parts of Montana's Custer National Forest.

Horse advocates said Friday that the fence along the edge of the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range would harm a centuries-old wild herd. The range's 150 horses also are being targeted for increased fertility control.

Federal officials say the measures are needed to rein in a herd that has expanded beyond its 42,000 acre range.

But construction of the fence would come on the heels of an Aug. 25 court ruling that allowed horse advocates to challenge the project. Forest Service spokeswoman Marna Daley says the fence near the Wyoming border has been planned for months.
