West High Dance Team Debut

BILLINGS - The Majorettes program at West High School made its final performance spring 2010. For the 2010-2011 school year, a new team takes its place: a dance squad.

The West High kick-off assembly Friday morning had all the traditional elements, excited students, cheerleaders, and football players gearing up for the home opener, but students also saw the debut of the West High Dance Team.

"I think it's huge for the school because it's new," Senior Karissa Ketterling said, "At state basketball games the other schools would have dance teams and the crowds really reacted well with them, so it'll be really good for our school."

The Majorettes program ended in 2010, so eight of the ten members joined the dance squad.
"They practice twice a week right now and they've been since June, they started right after tryouts, and they practiced all summer long," Dance Coach Tracy Stanaway said.

The dance team will perform at football, basketball and soccer games among other school events.

"It's nice to have it be part of my everyday life now, because dance has always been an after-school thing for me, so it's nice that I can be involved in my school and do the thing I love now," Senior Breshia Hardy said.

"They're just so excited, it is just so fun to see them excited and the school body excited and the teachers excited, so it's going to be a great year," Tracy said.

Tracy said the dance team would work hard to make sure no half-time show is the same. The West High Dance Team holds fundraisers to pay for their costumes and music.
