BILLINGS - Hundreds of American flags fly at a Billings Golf Course in remembrance of one of the worst acts of terrorism on American soil. It's called The Healing Field.

Every 5 feet, standing 8 feet tall, an American flag is placed in the grass near the driving range of Par-3 Golf Course in Billings.

They're in honor of those who lost their lives in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. In the middle of the flags is a clearing, with photographs that capture the heartbreaking moments of that day. "It's very moving," said Kris Koessl, Communications Chair for the Billings Exchange Clubs.

From 40-feet up, the view provokes even more emotion. "It's powerful," said Koessl.

Back on the ground, a walk through the flags promises to touch everyone. "It's just a very emotional experience. I think it would be different for everyone."

At the center, 45 flags to honor the 45 Montana soldiers who have died in the line of duty since the terror attacks nine years ago.

More than 40 volunteers started at dawn on Friday placing the flags. It's an exhibit that the Billings Exchange Clubs have been trying to bring here for years. "We've seen the video from other Healing Fields around the country. You get a feel for it. It's exciting. But, to actually walk through them is pretty impressive," said volunteer, Mark Koerber.

A moving tribute to remember a moment in America's history that won't ever be forgotten.

A tribute ceremony will be held for the public on September 11, 2001 at 3 pm. The Healing Field is free and open everyday from 11 until 10 pm.
