BILLINGS - A bittersweet homecoming for a Billings family whose beloved soldier was killed in action almost 40 years ago. The remains of 1st Lieutenant Paul G. Magers of Billings, killed in action in 1971, have been located and will be returning home by the end of August.

Magers was a Cobra Helicopter pilot who was killed during a routine mission in Vietnam, just after he had completed his pilot training and was deployed to battle. On behalf of his family, Montana National Guard Public Affairs Officer Major Tim Crowe released this statement that in part read: "The Magers Family is extremely grateful and honored by the outpouring of support and condolences. Paul was proud and honored to serve his country. He served with great pride, dignity and honor. We welcome Paul home."

The Montana Army National Guard Honor Guard will bestow full military honors upon Magers. A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 26 at the Dahl Funeral home in Billings with funeral services being held August 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Church in Billings. Magers will be laid to rest at the Yellowstone County Veterans Cemetery in Laurel.

The remains of an Oklahoma soldier were also recovered with those of Magers. The two men were in the helicopter together when it was hit by enemy fire and crashed.
