POWELL, WYOMING - The Humane Society and Park County officials have been working for more than a month to seize more than 150 cats.

Clifton Taylor said he's sad to see all the cats that were once at his home go. Taylor has lived in Powell, Wyoming for more than 50 years. Thursday afternoon the Park County Sheriffs Department came in with a search warrant to seize 157 cats.

"It’s terrible they’re all gone, not much hope of getting them back," said Taylor.

Outside Taylor’s home a trash pile where he said old cans of cat food were burned. Friday afternoon the Humane Society teamed up with vets to examine all the cats. Some are malnourished; some have upper respiratory infections, runny eyes and crusty noses.

Director of animal cruelty, Adam Parascandola said this case is unique because of where it happened. “We haven’t been involved in this part of the country much, in Wyoming and Montana. This is sort of a new area of the country for us to be at,” said Parascandola.

Taylor claimed he's done nothing wrong though, "I didn't do anything wrong."

Parascandola said a case like this is not uncommon though, “A lot of times what happens is people start out with a few cats and they multiply and they multiply. They get to a point where they realize they have too many cats and at that point it’s hard to get a grip and get a hold on spaying and neutering as quickly as they’re reproducing.”

The cats are currently being held at the Powell fairgrounds. Park County officials will determine next week whether any charges will be filed. Rescuers don't know how many cats can be saved, but those that are will go to area shelters.
