Montana Murray Disagrees On Winter Forecast

Tools

By Kenneth Wong

ROUNDUP - As the famous Punxsutawney Phil groundhog predicts six more weeks of winter Thursday morning, one of his cousins in Montana offered a conflicting forecast.

Just after 12:00 noon Thursday, dozens of people in Roundup gathered for the 2nd annual Groundhog Day celebration. The town's mayor, Bill Edwards, officiated the ceremony, as groundhog Montana Murray emerged from a purpose-built wooden shelter. After a few seconds outside of the shelter, Montana Murray reported no shadows, which means an early spring.

This is not the first time Montana Murray disagreed openly with his more famous cousin from Pennsylvania. In 2011, Montana Murray predicted six more weeks of winter, when Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring, and Montana Murray was correct.
