BILLINGS - A Billings’ woman will spend 20 years behind bars for killing a beloved Billings educator in a drunk driving accident.

Thirty-four year old Tawny Fisher-Jones was sentenced to 30 years in the Montana Women's Prison with 10 suspended for vehicular homicide while under the influence. That was the sentence handed down Wednesday morning by Yellowstone County District Court Judge Todd Baugh.

This is not her first conviction, court documents show she was convicted of criminal endangerment in 2005 for being under the influence of alcohol with four young children in her vehicle. "Miss Fisher-Jones, you owe the rest of your life to self-improvement and helping others," said Baugh.

Fisher-Jones ran a red light on King Avenue West in February killing Merry Jane Trewhella. She was a longtime teacher, wife, mother and grandmother. "The family asks for justice. I can't do justice. I can't bring back Merry Jane," said Baugh.

Fisher-Jones' blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit an hour after the crash. Fisher-Jones will also pay $10,000 in restitution.

Finally, a glimpse of remorse? Her first mug shot and the pic in the gazette showed her with a smirk, she needs to keep that head low and ask for forgiveness from the family and for herself.

twenty years is going to be a very long time, this will give her time to think whether alcohol will still be part of her life or not when she gets out.
