BILLINGS - Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks announce at a meeting that they will appeal the court decision in early August to place gray wolves on the endangered species list.

New plans are on the table to take gray wolves back off the endangered species list in Montana and Idaho.

Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks members met with stakeholders Friday morning to discuss the best course of action. Fish, Wildlife, and Parks spokesman Ron Aasheim said the group is looking to form a coalition with groups who are negatively affected by the endangered listing. They announced during the meeting that they will appeal the court's decision.

The Montana Wool Growers Association participated in the meeting. A spokesman said their goal is to de-list the gray wolf as quickly as possible, and they have some concerns with the efficiency of an appeal.

"We're looking at at least 2 or 3 years more of litigation," MWGA Director of Public Affairs Jim Brown said. "During that time, the wolves will be on the endangered list, which means we can't manage them in terms of numbers."

Aasheim said the Fish, Wildlife, and Parks will pursue rule changes to defer wolf problems throughout the appeals process. The appeals deadline is in early September.
