Golfing For A Cure As Relay For Life Nears

COLUMBUS - The sun is out, and for a group of Columbus teenagers, it was a great opportunity to have a swinging good time on the greens.

"It's a blast. It's a lot of fun," said one of the golfers.

But having a good time was not the only objective for these golfers. They are also helping out a good cause.

"A friend of ours, his mom has had cancer, she was actually in the Relay for Life before that," said 18-year-old Isaac McNally.

Isaac is talking about his friend, 19-year-old Tim Yeager. Both are students at Columbus High School. In their 8th Grade year, the two formed a Relay For Life team called "Remember The Cougars", a nod to the mascot of Columbus Public Schools.

"It was a team of just me and a couple buddies, and then it progressively became bigger and bigger," said Tim.

The team raises money for the American Cancer Society over the course of the year, and the golf tournament Thursday at Stillwater Golf Course is one of the bigger fundraisers. Since 2007, the team has raised a lot of money.

"After this year, we'll be close to raising thirty grand," said Tim.

Every year, about 15 to 25 people attend the golf tournament. The 2011 tournament is bittersweet. Many of the boys on the team have graduated from Columbus High, and are heading off to college. In addition, the team's coordinator, Brett Mitchell, is moving to North Dakota.

"I get a little choked up when I think about how much time I've spent with some of these kids, and how much they care, and how hard they've worked," said Brett.

The team, however, vows that this does not mean the team is ending.

"We're gonna still help out. We're gonna be here next year," said Tim.

"The team will continue," said Brett.

For Isaac, the dedication is especially important. In 2009, his mother lost her battle with the disease.

"Sometimes, it's easy to lay back and just complain about the things we fight against in everyday life," said Isaac, "it's good to see so many people putting up a fight to find a cure, raising money, and putting forth the right foot."

The Yellowstone Valley Relay For Life will take place on July 8th at 7:00 p.m., and will go until 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 9th.
