BILLINGS - The reclusive daughter of Montana Copper King William Clark spent most of her life solely in the company of her French dolls in her posh New York City apartment.

Huguette Clark has spent the past 22 years in a hospital, seeing almost no one but her lawyer and her accountant; a registered sex-offender.

The 104-year-old heiress has rarely been seen in public since her divorce in the early 1930's. Her mysterious existence causes scholars to question the handling of her estate, worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

She has only met her attorney twice and does not see relatives. Her most frequent contact is her accountant who himself has unpaid taxes.

One scholar said he hopes the recent publicity of the case will ensure fair handling of her estate.
"If there is abuse, if there is some chicanery going on, some hanky panky, now it's seen the light of day," said Keith Edgerton, a Montana State University, Billings, history professor who studies William Clark. "At least the perpetrators have the bright sunshine of the public now glaring right on them."

An MSNBC reporter, who became interested in Huguette Clark while researching real estate near her Connecticut mansion, first addressed the mysterious story in February.
