BILLINGS - A major donor to Montana's Democrats says 'no more' following remarks made by congressional candidate Dennis McDonald.

Cliff Edwards is a prominent Billings lawyer representing Republican Congressman Denny Rehberg in his suit against the fire department and city of Billings. Management at Rehberg Ranch said the fire department failed to respond properly to a 2008 fire.

Edwards took issue with multiple statements McDonald made to the media regarding the lawsuit, which he described as "cheap shots". In a letter to the Democratic Party, Edwards said he'll donate to individual campaigns, but doesn't want a penny of his money going towards McDonald's bid for congress.

McDonald released this statement in response: "Cliff Edwards is a fine lawyer and is doing what he should do, but he is disingenuous about the lawsuit seeking a report from the city. The lawsuit is about money damages. The suit claims that firefighters were careless and wrongful. Rehberg is asking the taxpayers of Billings to pay him money damages. I view the lawsuit as frivolous, so it's not surprising that Rehberg is trying to deflect attention from filing the litigation."

According to campaign finance website OpenSecrets.org, Edwards himself has given $5,000 to the state Democratic Party since 2006.
