Colon and Breast Cancer Screening

BILLINGS - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released two new reports saying too many Americans are not being screened for breast and colon cancer.

St. Vincent Healthcare pathologist Dr. Michael Brown specializes in diagnosing breast and colon cancer. He said too many Americans are putting themselves at risk.

"Screening saves lives. Early cancer detection leads to earlier treatment, identification of smaller tumors which leads to longer livelihood and lives saved."

A recent report from the CDC says Montana is one of the states with the lowest screening rates. Fewer than 60% of Montanans are screened for colon cancer, and fewer than 78% of women get screened for breast cancer.

"We're in such a large geographic area and we're a rural state and it takes quite an effort for people to get to see a health care provider or get to an area or medical center where the screening can occur," said Dr. Brown.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among adult women in the United States. Dr. Brown said women should start getting clinical breast exams from ages 20 to 39 and at 40 begin annual exams.

The CDC reports 22 million Americans who should be screened for colon cancer have failed to do so, and 7 million women who should have mammograms have not been screened.

Both hospitals have free mammograms for the uninsured

great, now where do you go to get screened if you have no health insurance?
