BILLINGS - Dozens of parents showed up today at the American Medical Response Center to have their children's car seats checked.

"We do everything possible to make sure our children are safe, the food they eat, the safety of the car, the yard, everything," said Treba Holowell.

Parents may be very careful, but according to senior car seat checker Stephanie Martin, that doesn't mean they are safe.

"Most parents aren't well informed in car seats they usually don't understand how to install them, we're getting a lot more parents that are coming in," said Martin.

One mother who has been coming here often explained why the help received is so important.

"I guess reading through the manual doesn't give you all the details about things in the back-end that should be covered up that can hurt the infant in the crash and all that," said Erin Augustine.

According to AMR senior checker Stephanie Martin, parents may have the best of intentions, but they often make mistakes when buckling their children. In fact, she says that up to 80% of car seats are improperly installed.

"Most often is, they don't have the proper position, they don't have the straps at the shoulder stop where they are supposed to be," said Martin.

Car seat checks are available at the AMR center on the second Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
