BILLINGS - Thursday is the first day candidates can file for public office at the state and county levels.

To mark the occasion, Yellowstone County Democrats gathered in Billings to introduce incumbents and new candidates seeking the democratic nomination for legislative seats across the county.

The chair of the Yellowstone County Democratic Central Committee, Joseph Raffiani, said they hope to attract more qualified candidates for 2012.

"(The) last legislative session was very embarrassing," said Raffiani. "The legislators did not reflect Montana's values, and we became the butt of jokes across the country. And the goal of the Democratic Party this session will be to try to get candidates who are going to help restore responsibility."

The Secretary of State's office said Thursday night that a record 155 candidates filed the necessary paperwork and payment, which beats the previous record of 106 candidates filing on opening day in 2010. The deadline for filing for public office is March 12.
