Corrections Layoffs

BILLINGS - A Montana corrections program laid off five workers Wednesday.

The employees of the Montana Corrections Enterprise in Deer Lodge manage inmate work and job-training programs at the state and women's prisons.

The program is self-supported and does not receive appropriations from the general fund. Administrators said they've seen a sharp decline in orders for the goods they make, and cuts are necessary to stay financially afloat. They said they're encouraging the workers to apply for open positions within the company.

About 400 inmates take part in the program. The layoffs are not expected to affect their participation.
