Montana Reservation Census

BILLINGS - For the first time in census history, Montana reservations will not receive a census form in the mail, but instead will be visited in person.

Billings census officials say tribal governments were given options on how to be counted. They believe this method will provide a more accurate population figure.

Native Americans will also be given the chance to identify themselves by their tribe and culture rather than their location. It's an important opportunity that officials say helps tribes maintain their identities.

"There's a sense of pride in their culture and their background and they want that to live on and this is one way that we can help them with that and they can help us at the same time," said Billings census office assistant manager, Dale Welliever.

The Montana division of the U.S. Census started counting reservation and tribal lands three weeks ago. So far officials say they've received positive responses.
