Paging Dr. Roboto

BILLINGS - It takes a skilled hand to perform surgery and surgeons at St. Vincent Healthcare now have a more precise touch. That's because their new DaVinci robot will be lending a hand.

Surgeons can operate from across the room thanks to a magnified high-definition view of the procedure. St. Vincent will use the robot for technical adult and pediatric surgeries.

Surgeons said the robot's precision will lead to shorter recovery times. "In addition to that we have multi-faceted or jointed instruments that mimic the motion of a human wrist," said Operating Room Manager Bobbi Jo Drozd, "that allows us to get into areas that you could not previously get in with conventional laparoscopic surgery."

Drozd said they still aren't sure whether their new robot is male or female. For that answer, they're turning to area students who will compete to name the robot with cash prizes up for grabs.
