World Water Day

BILLINGS - It’s something you use every day, but for many people across the world finding it is next to impossible.

"It is a world crisis and it kills actually more people than guns do in wars." Billings resident Nadine Hart said the crisis is unclean drinking water.

Hart along with hundreds of volunteers gathered Saturday to observe World Water Day. Participants visited different booths and walked 5 km, representing the distance many people have to travel in order to reach clean water.

Nine year old Keegan Lunman lived in Uganda for 3 months. She said she now has a new appreciation for life in America. "I know that I am very lucky to have clean water and to get running water.”

Ronnie Nsubuga is from Uganda. He said many people in the U.S. may have trouble understanding how serious the water crisis is in Africa.

"Africa is a continent with over 800 million people. And the number 1 killer in Africa is a water crisis. Bad water, dirty water, and that's what has brought the diseases, the poverty, the crisis."

Hart said she hopes Saturday’s event will raise awareness for the problems that many Africans face daily. "One person’s life is valuable and they deserve the dignity just like anybody else does."

Hart and dozens of others hope to preserve life by raising awareness of the problem. They also plan to visit the continent in an effort to help locals purify and use water more efficiently.
