Gearing up for the Outdoors

BILLINGS - It's that time of year again, when the weather warms up and people start cleaning out their garages. Many are gearing up for camping and fishing season by going through last year's equipment and figuring out what they'll need for this year's outdoor adventures.

"I'm just looking for a few specific things that will pack handily in my RV because I keep my stuff packed in like a gear bag. My duck hunting equipment and fishing equipment, so I've just got to grab the right bag. I have a staging area where I leave this stuff. I go prepared," said shopper Jim Ford.

Sleeping bags are a big hit this year as usual, but storeowners say people are flocking to the fishing. At the Rainbow Run Fly Shop, storeowner Jim McCall said the warm weather is good for business, "It influences our business more than anything else. The economy does of course, competition does, but we are weather driven," said McCall.

Ford said he enjoys the Montana weather. He takes an annual trip from Nebraska each year for the C.M. Russell Art Auction. He says outfitting his RV is essential for the trip and flying isn't an option. "I cannot carry the things I think I need with me, a couple of fishing poles, and a shotgun and a rifle on an airplane. I need to get out and be ready to go into action," said Ford.

The weather helps business, but McCall thinks it's doing more than that. "It's just been a dramatic increase in business and people are just happy."

Now, it's just a matter of figuring out what equipment you'll need to start enjoying the great outdoors.
