BILLINGS - Judges hear endless excuses as to why people want to get out of jury duty, but after a five-week-long murder trial, one juror said serving is an eye-opening and worthwhile experience.

Julie Burton is the public relations Coordinator at Billings Clinic. She wouldn't talk about specific details over the Covington deliberation.

Burton said for many jurors balancing work and a trial can be overwhelming, but that's not an excuse. "I feel that people shouldn't run away from getting their summons for jury," she said. But she'll tell you up front, "it's an inconvenience, it does affect your work world and your family, and sometimes how you sleep."

Some put in 8 hour work days after a full day in court, but as tired as they may be, jurors can't afford to miss a vital detail. "It's a story that is told piece by piece by both the prosecution and the defense," Burton said, "there are times that you think that info being presented to you is absolutely irrelevant and later on you find out it may be the most relevant detail."

Burton said even with all the details and everyone's perspective finding a verdict is stressful. "Especially for a trial that has this level of significance, there's a moment that's uncomfortable, and that moment does not go away," she said, "it doesn't go away even as you're reading the verdict."

Burton said jurors experience a range of emotions, from boredom to fascination. She said it was an unforgettable experience, that she considers an honor and a duty.

The jury convicted Covington of all 15 counts. A sentencing date is yet to be set.
