Otter Creek Bid

BILLINGS - Montana officials have received one qualified bid for more than 500,000,000 tons of coal near Ashland. Ark Land Company, a subsidiary of Arch Coal, submitted a bid to the DNRC which includes a bonus payment of $85 million dollars.

The state land board voted to open the Otter Creek tracts for bids in December, but failed to receive qualified bids by its February deadline. Missouri-based Arch Coal expressed interest at the time but said the price was too steep. The board then lowered its asking price.

The DNRC will review the bid, then make a recommendation to the land board, which meets on Thursday. Environmentalists are opposed to selling the tracts, saying it will damage habitat and cause pollution.
