BILLINGS - A Laurel Police Officer pleads not guilty Monday to charges that he assaulted his wife.

Joel Sauter is charged with misdemeanor partner family member assault. Court officials said that's a typical charge for a first offense. Monday morning, he pleaded not guilty in municipal court. A SWAT team responded to Sauter's house Saturday to reports of domestic violence.

Police said Sauter may have been armed and intoxicated. Sauter covered bond, which the judge set at just over a thousand dollars. His next court appearance is scheduled for April, 6th.

Sauter, who is a 12 year veteran of the force, is on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
