BILLINGS - Senator Max Baucus said he won't abandon Libby Asbestos victims as pressure mounts to pass health care reform.

He's responding to an article from politico.com claiming he and other U.S. Senators are under pressure to pare down health care reform provisions.

The article said President Obama is asking certain senators to get rid of special deals that could bog down the bill's passage. In a written statement Friday, Baucus said, "I can't understand why anyone would want to make it impossible to meet our obligation to deal with this tragedy."

He added, "This is about stepping up to fulfill a promise made to all Americans 30 years ago."

Nearly 300 people in Libby have died from asbestos-related causes.

If this bill is to pass it need to be rid of, not some, but all of the special interest money that is packed into both the House and Senate bills. If they get rid of the special interest riders and funding for abortion compromise can begin.

How much money has been contributed to Max Baucus by asbestos plaintiffs lawyers?
