BILLINGS – Wednesday, a deliberate homicide charge against a former Billings pastor was dropped, and Thursday, he spoke out for the first time from his home in Bend, Oregon.

Carey Greenlee said he was relieved to hear that retired Montana Supreme Court Justice John Warner had dropped the charges against him. Greenlee was accused of killing his wife Anita 20 years ago during a hunting trip near Red Lodge.

In a written statement e-mailed to KULR-8 News Thursday, Mr. Greenlee said the past nine months have been extremely stressful on his wife and 11 children.

He wrote, "Over 19 years ago Anita, my wife for over 17 years and I went hunting with our daughter, Teka, and Anita's father. Three people who love Anita were there and have always agreed that it was a tragic accident that took our loved one's life." He continued by thanking his supporters and legal counsel.

Justice Warner said Greenlee could not get a fair trial because evidence that may be used in his defense had been lost and that the state did not present strong enough evidence to justify the two-decade delay in filing charges.

The judge also ruled that prosecutors can revive murder charges against Greenlee at any time, especially if new evidence is discovered.

The state said that it was confident it could have secured a conviction at trial, but respects the court's decision.
