Covington Murder Trial

BILLINGS - The defense began making its case Thursday in the murder trial of a Billings man.

Richard Covington, 47, is accused of killing neighbors Patti Hubbert, Norman Leighton, and Gerald Morris in September of 2006. The usually stoic Covington appeared visibly nervous Thursday as his father looked on.

Several defense witnesses took the stand suggesting that someone else could've committed the crime. One said he last saw Gerald Morris leaving in a teal green truck to help a friend move furniture, and, he said Covington was not the driver as the state claims.

Prosecutors questioned the witnesses credibility as some admitted using drugs at the time and had trouble recalling specific details.

Testimony resumes Friday morning and the defense could wrap up sometime next week. The state rested its case Wednesday after nearly three weeks of testimony.
