BILLINGS - Thursday was a special day for 60 students at Rocky Mountain College who have faced struggles obtaining an education.

“I’m low income and I’m first generation college student. So this whole experience is really new to me,” said Dustin Schneider. “Services for Academic Success helped me stay in school.”

SAS at Rocky Mountain helps provide funding for students from low income families to first generation college students along with students with disabilities.

“Well obviously, I’m in a wheel chair, I’m paraplegic. So it presents obstacles on daily basis,” said Cori Wilkerson. She is one of 44 students who received $1,000 dollar scholarship from SAS.

“It’s really helping with tuition. I do have medical expenses and I live with my grandparents. They aren’t able to pay all my way so it helps with tuition and with books-just getting through college,” said Wilkerson.

Schneider and Wilkerson hope the help they're getting along with their own drive to succeed will inspire others.

“Perseverance. I mean it's really just sticking through it. I mean life really does get hard a lot of times,” said Schneider.

“Just keep on trekking through. Don’t give up. There’s always a way around it even if you have to go find someone to help you out,” said Wilkerson.

Wilkerson is double majoring in communications and music performance and Schneider will be going to grad school for communication studies.

Director of SAS, Jane Van Dyk said 30% of students in the program are on the honor roll and last year 119 went on to graduate school.
