Cody Two Cents More Tax

CODY, WYOMING - Park County voters may be asked to add two pennies to their current four-cent sales tax. County and city officials discussed two sales tax projects in Cody Wednesday.

Penny Preston reports they may be making state history. Park County is constructing a new Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality approved landfill. Government representatives from Powell, Meeteetse, Cody, and Park County estimate the total project cost will be eighteen million. West Park Hospital says it needs fourteen million for a new emergency room wing. Hospital officials took local elected officials on a tour of the current facilities to demonstrate their need. Then, they discussed their one-cent cap tax proposal with the government representatives.

None of the Powell city council members attended. One of the county commissioners said this tour should have taken place a long time ago.”

The hospital wants to put their tax request on the primary ballot in August. But, the landfill committee wants to wait for November.

Landfill Committee member and Cody City Council member Sam Krone said, “The decision hasn’t been made to proceed with the cap tax or not. It just hasn’t been. And what we’ve always thought is that it would be on the general election ballot.”

That would produce two different cap tax ballot measures. Park County Clerk Kelly Jensen explained, “Park County, because we do not have the general purpose, could have, hypothetically two separate pennies for two separate projects in a specific purpose, aka, cap tax plan.”

Cody Mayor Nancy Tia Brown doesn’t think the voters will go for two cents more, and suggested a compromise. She said, “So if we had the hospital proposal and the landfill proposal, if they both passed then they would share that penny.” Neither side would budge, however. So, Brown asked the group to meet again, to discuss the possibility of one combined tax instead of two.

If two cap tax initiatives were passed by the voters, it would be a first for Park County be a first for Park County, and a first for Wyoming.
