School Board Site Visits

BILLINGS - School District 2 is planning to send trustees on the road to investigate potential superintendent candidates and it is raising some concerns.

The two main issues that came up concerning the site visits are where this money is coming from and why is this necessary.

“I don't think we can afford this in our district. I’m a tax payer and I’m tired of paying taxes and I don't want another mill levy to have to raise funds to cover this when its not necessary,” said Darlene Nicholson.

Trustees said the travel costs are already part of the board's budget and would not require additional money from taxpayers. The plan is to send trustees to New York where candidate Eric Ely works and to California to learn more about candidate Keith Beeman. The cost of these site visits is expected to run around $5,000 dollars.

“We have always had a budget to use for board purposes and that's the money were spending. And I think we will likely not spend near what we have budgeted this year even if we spend funds to travel to these locations,” said school district trustee Joel Guthals.

Board members plan to do additional phone interviews with Scott Rogers and Keith Meyer. They could continue on with site visits for them as well. The top priority is picking the right candidate.
