BILLINGS - Cities across the nation and right here at home are jumping at the chance for beefed-up internet service.

Google plans to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations. The company says it will provide home internet connections at speeds of more than 100 times faster than what most Americans currently have access to. Montana cities are lining up.

Missoula, Bozeman and Butte have already submitted applications. John Engen, Missoula's mayor, said the new technology would be good for business.

"Having high quality broadband capability sets you apart from other communities, or in some cases makes you competitive and I'd like us to be as competitive as we can be," said Engen.

The pilot project is called Google Fiber for Communities. Billings city government said they are still looking into it. Google said it will offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 people and potentially up to 500,000.

The deadline to submit applications is March 26. Private citizens can also nominate a community.

Longview, Texas has been getting quite a bit of attention lately in relation to Google Fiber for Communities. I'm most excited to watch what type of apps can be created as a result of google fiber.
