BILLINGS - A forensic scientist ties a Billings murder victim to the vehicle driven by the suspect in the case.

Forty-seven-year-old Richard Covington is accused of killing Patti Hubbert, Norman Leighton, and Gerald Morris in September of 2006. A crime lab technician recovered fibers from Morris' clothing. She said they match fibers from a car Covington borrowed shortly before Morris was reported missing.

"The fibers were similar in all these tests," said Alice Ammen with the Montana State Crime Lab, "and were indicative of Gerald Morris' last contact." "He either sat on that seat," she said, "or another textile with identical fibers."

Ammen said they identified the company that produced half a million yards of the fiber for vehicles in the U.S. and abroad.

Ammen said recovered dog hairs and wood chippings also tie Covington to the scene. She testified that hairs found on Hubbert's gag are similar to those pulled from Covington's dog, Sweet Pea, and she added small wood chips found on the victims' clothing are similar to shavings found on Covington's gloves.
