WASHINGTON, D.C. - There are no plans to create any national monuments in Montana, according to U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., questioned Salazar during a senate hearing Tuesday about a leaked Interior Department memo. The memo, released last week, listed possible ideas for monument designations. Salazar also dispelled rumors of land purchases near the Missouri River Breaks.

"There's also been talk about possible land agreements along the Missouri River Breaks," Tester said. "Does the department plan on buying land in the Breaks?"

"I am not aware that there is any such plan," Salazar replied. Salazar told Tester he would seek local public input on any public lands decisions. He says public land management should be driven by local communities and elected leaders.

Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., introduced a bill last week that would require congressional approval for the president to designate an area of land as a national monument.
