Fire Trucks Put on Hold

BILLINGS - The Billings City Council decided Monday night not to move forward with a plan to purchase several smaller fire trucks.

It's a project proposed by city Fire Chief Paul Dextras.

"It's not a perfect concept, but it is a concept that's been in the fire service for around 20-25 years," Dextras said. "[We’re] matching the right size vehicle to the right size emergency."

Dextras said 70% of the calls the Billings Fire Department responds to are medical calls. He said the smaller trucks, called quick response vehicles, would be more useful in those situations and better able to maneuver in town. He added that they are significantly less expensive to buy and maintain than larger trucks.

After a 5-to-5 vote, the council decided they needed more information before purchasing the vehicles.

Anyone who voted against the proposal can bring it up again at the next meeting. In the meantime, Dextras will research other departments in the region that use the smaller vehicles.
