Laurel Celebrates Boys Basketball

LAUREL - While driving around Laurel, it's not hard to see, the community is excited about its state champions.

'I think it's awesome," said Sue Hallen, Laurel resident. "It was probably the best thing I've been through."

The feeling can also be felt at the high school, where students roam the halls reminiscing about the big victory.

"It was probably the highlight of my high school career," said Alex Gappa. "When the team brought the trophy over, it was pretty much like sharing the win with us and that meant a lot to us as fans."

Although the Locomotives have won multiple state titles recently, this one could mean the most to the town. It's the first boys basketball championship since 1972.

"People still talk about that '72 team and I think this one will be looked at for a long time as that same level of play," said Don Smarsh. "Great group of kids; it was so much fun."

While the town is already looking forward to a repeat next year, fans say they'll never forget this first place finish.
