Lily the Dog

BILLINGS - Many dog owners spend hours teaching their canine new tricks but for one Malta resident it was her dog who taught her.

"We just never gave up, you just don't give up." For Malta resident Bonnie Wiederrick giving up on her 3-year-old daschund Lilly was not an option.

"When you looked at her and she had her little ears up and she would still give you a kiss it was just like everything that counted was still there," Wiederrick said.

Two years ago, Lily lost the use of her hind legs. Within days, Wiederrick made the 200-mile journey to Billings where Lily would under-go extensive back surgery and therapy. Despite all of the care, Lily's prognosis was not good. But determination and hope gave this little pooch a new lease on life, allowing her to walk again.

Lily's rehabilitation practitioner, Kay Lynn Allen, said she was amazed the first day Lily moved her back legs. "It was just exciting, like you couldn't wait to get on the phone and call bonnie and say ,'guess what Lily did today!' it was just you know there was hope, but once she moved her feet on her own then there was really hope."

Now, a little less than 2 years later, Lily can walk on her own; success that Wiederrick said inspired her as Lily's owner. "She taught us so much. She taught us patience, trust. I would put her in her water therapy and she was scared to death but she trusted me."

Though Lily's treatment was expensive, about $6,000 dollars total, Wiederrick said it was worth every penny.

"I couldn't put a price on her, my right arm? You know I'd give my right arm for her if it would do anything! There is no price to put on what she has done for us."

Lily still under-goes regular therapy sessions, her owner's say she is able to walk short distances, but uses a cart and stroller for longer trips.
