BILLINGS - Officials said they received nearly double the interest expected to fill School District 2's top job.

Twenty-three people applied to succeed superintendent Jack Copps when he officially retires this summer. Seventeen of the applicants were from out of state with several of them having ties to Montana.

Four women applied for the job. Montana School Board Association, Bob Vogel, said the interest exceeded expectations.

"The board was elated to see the response and I was pleased and delighted to see it as well because we really hoped we'd get in the average range about 12-15” said Vogel.

The board will begin the screening process next Tuesday and hold interviews March 1st and 2nd.
