BILLINGS - Part of the Signal Peak Mine near Roundup is closed due to safety concerns.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration has issued a closure order preventing additional mining on the Longwall. The Longwall is a large piece of machinery used to shear off coal from the face of the mine.

MSHA officials said the closure comes after an accident with the Longwall December 23 that sent one miner to the hospital with cracked ribs and several other injured bones. They said they do not issue closures lightly. Several inspectors were on sight Wednesday.

Signal Peak must present a plan to address the issue before MSHA officials re-open it. No mine officials were available for comment.
