BILLINGS - Trash is piling up on public lands across the nation. The federal Bureau of Land Management said it is spending an increasing amount of tax dollars to clean up illegally dumped sofas, refrigerators and computers.

Jim Sparks, Billings field manager, said problem areas in the region are around Acton. He said people like to use the unwanted items for target shooting practice. He said with the help of residents hauling it to the landfill and with increased patrol they have reduced the problem.

"Really the biggest thing is the cost, the cost to us and the cost to the taxpayer for us to go out and clean them up, and it just ruins them for everybody else to use," said Sparks.

Sparks said illegal dumping of trash on public lands carries a $250 dollar fine.
