BILLINGS - Almost all of the roads that were closed across the west this weekend are now open to drivers. The massive storm that dumped several feet of snow on the Dakotas affected many people's Christmas plans.

One Billings family that was affected by the storm had to change their travel plans. Kristen and Alan Rapacz have made their way to Minnesota almost every year for Christmas.

"Its been probably the last 25 years or so we make a big Minnesota loop. Just a lot of traditions and fun family gatherings that goes on every year," said Kristen Rapacz.

With many stops along the way the family has always made the drive to visit family. "We've always driven. We have three girls so it's too hard. It's a big family," said Alan. This year the family found themselves in a bind with winter weather hammering the Midwest. Snow and ice caused road closures across the country.

"We planned to leave December 23rd that was looking good, until December 23rd when we checked. Roads were closing and storms started swirling," said Kristen. The family decided to stay in Billings for Christmas this year.

They made the best of the situation and found their time at home to be quite enjoyable. "We just focused on family time and a little dominoes. Some rest and reading. Just nice peace and quiet," said the Rapacz.

Their three daughters we're able to enjoy their break as well taking part in the winter festivities. They hope next year will bring safer roads so they can return home to see their families.

It was great to see the Rapacz family even though it could not be in person. The Minnesota relatives missed them!
